Assistive Technology

Cranleigh provides opportunities for students to access the curriculum through a range of assistive technologies including:

  • Intellikeys modified keyboard
  • Voice output devices
  • Interactive white boards
  • Switches
  • Network access in every classroom

Throughout the school a major focus is the development of communication and social skills. A total communication approach is practiced incorporating

  • the spoken word
  • signing
  • augmented communication programs such as PECS

Some students use communication devices such as a voice output devises while others use the Intellikeys keypad to type information or to access educational software. Other students participate in Intensive Interaction to develop communication and interaction skills.

Cranleigh School is committed to exposing students to a wide variety of learning experiences and the computer is regarded to be a valuable teaching and learning tool.  Each classroom is now connected to a student network system. We have installed interactive white boards into many classrooms. All classrooms have at least one computer, using the PC platform. Some have as many as three. Students throughout the school are encouraged to use computers to access a range of educational software, or to type their messages or stories.

If students are unable to use a conventional keyboard, the Intellikeys keypad and its range of overlays are available. These provide access to the highly flexible Intellipics and Intellitalk programs.

Another focus in the school is the use of switches. Students with high support needs can access some form of communication device or exercise some control over their immediate environment by activating a range of 'end use' appliances via a switch suitable for their needs.
